Water Powered Mill at Gayle Mill

Gayle Mill is an extra ordinary example of Britain's industrial and social heritage. Built in 1784 to spin cotton, it has had to re-invent itself time and time again, harnessing new technologies using the sustainable energy of natural waterpower to become a sawmill in the 1870s and an early pioneering electricity generator at the turn of the 20th century. Gayle Mill featured in the 2004 BBC 'Restoration' series and came 3rd in the national final. It first opened to the public in 2008, and visitors can now see the historic turbines, line-shafting and some of the woodworking machinery being demonstrated.
Visits can only be made in guided tous - at 11.00, 12.30, 14.00, and 15.30 Tuesday to Saturday (and Sundays/Mondays on bank holiday weekends). Each tour lasts approximately on hour. Tickets available from the Mill on 01969 667320 or the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes Museum, 01969 666210.
On the first Sunday of every month, there are two special demonstration sessions of the heritage machinery, when visitors not only have a full guided tour but can watch traditional wooden items being madel. Each sessions lasts about 2 hours and tickets are £10 for adults and £5 for children.
